How to begin with newsgroups

a First, you must be registered on a news server. We recommend Giganews or Usenet to begin.
If you have not yet made choices, visit our comparison of news servers.

Your news server will send an news server address, a username and password.

How to configure your news server into Grabit

a Launch Grabit.

a Right click on 'My GrabIt' then 'Add server':

a

a A window to configure server opens, simply fill in the information you have :

y

a Here, you can also configure the number of connections (by default 3).
This is the number of downloads that will be launched in parallel. Each connection is limited to a certain download speed, so it is advisable to maximize the number of connections, depending on the chosen server to enjoy your connection.

a Well, your news server is configured in your Grabber.

Retrieve the list of groups

a Once the server is configured, you must retrieve the list of news groups available on this server.

u

a Right-click the server and then 'Full update groups'. The list of newsgroups is then displayed on the right.

Retrieving data headers groups

a You must now select the group you want to retrieve the headers of files it contains, and then see what it contains. Some sites list the contents of the groups, which avoids having to do this manipulation.

Even better, please visit NZB files to get this super system.

Meanwhile, the most interesting, for example :
alt.binaries.cd.Image
alt.binaries.dvd.Image
alt.binaries.boneless
alt.binaries.movies.french
...

You will understand basically that is still often a classification in these groups. Music, Movies, Software ...

a Once your group selected, right click it and then 'Subscribe' :

r

a You will notice that the group was added below your server, on the left. Right click it and then 'Full update' to retrieve all the headers and see group content.

t

The recovery time varies depending on the number of files.
a Then, on the Articles tab, you see all these headers.

i

a A short explanation of the different tabs before proceed to the next section

z

Articles : browse files on the newsgroup selected on the left
Batch : Work in progress : data download, file repair, removal, recovery headers, discussion groups ...
All groups : displays all the available groups on the news server (here Giganews)
Grabit Usenet Search : search files. Limited to 2 searches per day.

Download Data

a Here we are.

To download a DVD for example, multiple files are needed. For example :

e

NZB file : See section NZB Files
NFO file : Text files containing information about the source and content files
PAR2 files : File integrity monitoring. See section Repair for more informations
RAR files : The DVD Fedora final cut into 19 files 54MB each

The necessary files are among the RAR and PAR2. The NFO may still contain some interesting information and necessary ...

a Then select the files you want to download, right-click 'Grab Selected Article' !

Search for data to download

a You will notice that it is not easy to navigate through all these files, especially since they do not have necessarily explicit name. Grabit has a system of research, however limited.

a You have two alternatives :

1. Use NZB files (see section NZB Files )
2. Use directories frequently referencing data uploads to the news server, as BinNews, which has a system of advanced search and information necessary to find what names have the files you want to download.

Happy surfing !
