Why repair the files downloaded?
You'll notice that when downloading files, each file is one component of a larger file. For example, an initial weight of 700 MB will be available as several files of 15 MB. This division depends on the person who posted the data.
Sometimes there are problems in transferring files, in the sense Post> News Server or Server-News> Your PC. These problems can result in reversal or lack of bits in the downloaded files, for example, or a file that has changed names along the way, a missing file on the quarantine file to download ...
You will notice that there are available files named in the same way that your .rar files but with the extension PAR2 :
These files correspond to volume recovery, they contain data to fill the missing bits, in reasonable numbers, of course.
For example, if a file is missing from the 19 files downloaded, you may be lucky it is reconstituted according to the archives PAR2. By cons, if you are missing 2 files, the chances of recovery are much lower, even zero. It is therefore essential to recover these files. If a single bit is corrupted in a file and you do not have these records, it may be that you can not retrieve the data !
What are the repair tools ?
Increasingly, the grabbers have repair modules integrated which, at each end of downloading a set of records corresponding to one file, will automatically start and if necessary repair corrupted data.
But it is always useful to keep handy tool QuickPar available here : Download
Once installed, the PAR2 files are automatically associated with this program. Just run a PAR2 so that it checks all files. You can also launch QuickPar and import a PAR2 files, but you complicate the task.
If you run a PAR2 files, here's what you get:
You will notice above the first red box, the PAR2 file containing information of the final archive, displayed in the first red box : approximately 740 MB when it is reconstituted (see next chapter : Extraction).
In the second red box, you can see an example of corrupt files that will be repaired thanks to all the PAR2 files.
The completes files appear in green.
There is nothing complicated about using this program, I'll let you discover more ...
A tip before completing this section, it may be useful to set the program to perform an automatic repair of files, without asking.
Special case
There are basically two types of records for large files to download : RAR files and .001, .002, .. files.
During the repair, the. RAR are repaired as described above
For cons, the files .001, .002, ... in addition to being repaired, are merged to give directly the final archive. All files .001, .002 will be automatically deleted to give you the final archive. Not so bad !
