What is Torrent ?

A torrent is a file containing particular datas, that allow you to download one file on the internet.

That downloading system works in a way like P2P system. Users are linked, one user download one/several files on the other user remote .

Contrary to P2P systems (kazaa, shareaza, emule...) torrent are based on central trackers (servers) where are stored user list and their shared files.

When you want to download a file through that system, you need a particular file, with .TORRENT extension. In this file are stored the name of the file you want to download, their size, and some control datas, and an IP adress of a tracker, server that coordinate comunications between all the clients and you.

Moreover, search engine of torrent file are available on the internet. That do not exist for P2P systems.

Finally, when you're downloading, you have to send datas on a central server (tracker), in order to improve transfert efficiency depending to user number.
